Thanks to all who came out for the April 2010 meeting of AOS! A few topics were discussed, but the one that took the most time and drew the most lively discussion by far was introductory computer science education and the potential role of open source software therein. Below is a list of related links. Please feel free to leave a comment on this post with any topics or resources I may have overlooked. Hope to see you at the next meeting!
- "Introduction to Computing and Programming in Python: A Multimedia Approach" by Mark Guzdial, ISBN 0-13-117655-2.
- "Hello World! Computer Programming for Kids and Other Beginners" by Warren D. Sande and Carter Sande, ISBN 1933988495.
- A GitHub repository containing implementations of various algorithms and data structures in JavaScript.
- Modern version control systems such as Git, Mercurial, and Bazaar; how they relate to more dated systems like CVS and Subversion; and related communites such as GitHub and bitbucket.
- A blog post discussing visual tools in conjunction with command line tools. This relates to another discussion on the interesting Code Bubbles IDE concept.
