Thanks to all who attended the December 2009 meeting of the Acadiana Open Source Group. Only a few members attended, but the discussion was enjoyed and included a variety of topics. Thanks again to the UL Computer Science Department for hosting this meeting.
Highlights
- The recent demo of Google's Chrome OS project
- The imminent release of the Mozilla Thunderbird 3 e-mail client and Mozilla Firefox 3.6 web browser this month
- The adoption of the open source Zimbra webmail and collaboration application by UL
- Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10) upgrade woes - may be best to stick with Jaunty Jackalope (9.04)
- Android versus Java ME and use of the Eclipse IDE for mobile development
- MIT OpenCourseWare, Wikibooks, Wikiversity, and the possibility of a similar but more cohesive project for open textbooks
Upcoming Events
- Arrangements have been made to relocate future Acadiana Open Source Group meetings to the LITE Center. This should stabilize facility and parking availability without moving meetings very far from UL campus. This move will kick off at the January meeting with a tour of the facility by LITE staff and a presentation on how they apply open source technologies to what they do.
- The Lafayette Developer Network or LFTDevNet is hosting a code-a-thon as part of the Great American Hackathon event hosted by the Sunlight Foundation. The object of this code-a-thon will be the DataLFT project, an effort inspired by the DataSF project to create a public database of information for the city of Lafayette using open source technologies. The event will be held at the Travis Street Technology Center on Saturday December 12th beginning at 9:30 AM.
- Do It With Drupal, a training seminar on the Drupal content management system, will be held December 9-12 at the Marriot in New Orleans.
- If you know of any other OSS events, please post information and a link to the AOS Google Group. Thanks in advance for your contribution.
