Thanks to all who attended the July 2008 meeting of the Acadiana Open Source Group. Matthew Turland's presentation on the development of PHP-based web services using the Zend Framework was well-attended, particularly by UL students returning for the Fall semester. Announcements:
- The Acadiana .NET User Group will hold a meeting on Thursday August 28 at LEDA beginning at 6 PM. The topic of the presentation is "Embrace Open Source on Codeplex" and details Microsoft's open source project hosting web site.
- The annual Zend PHP Conference and Expo will be held September 15-18 in Santa Clara, CA and its session schedule will include a presentation by one of our members, Matthew Turland.
- The next meeting of the Acadiana Open Source Group is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday September 24 at 6:30 PM with a presentation on popular open source content management systems. The location and further details will be announced closer to the meeting date.
- The Lafayette CampFiber will be held Saturday October 4 at the Travis Technology Center. It will include a segment for developers to discuss the technologies and platforms they use and potential impact of the LUSFiber project on their innovations. Admission is free but seating is limited, so register soon.
- This year's ApacheCon will be held at the Sheraton New Orleans November 3-7. Early bird registration ends on Friday August 29, so register soon if you plan to attend.
- A combined php|works / PyWorks 2008 Conference will be held November 12-14 in Atlanta, GA and its schedule was recently announced.
- The Acadiana Open Source Group is always looking for sponsorship of refreshments or door prizes. Please contact Matthew Turland if your company would be interested.
All Acadiana residents with an interest in developing open source technologies are invited to attend the August 2008 meeting of the Acadiana Open Source Group on Wednesday, August 27 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Advanced Computer Technology and Research building on UL campus thanks to arrangements made by faculty of the Computer Science Department for us to use their facilities. The exact room number will be announced once it is available, but signs will be posted around the building on the day of the meeting to direct attendees. Parking is available in Zone 13. This meeting is unique in the lifetime of AOS because the meeting date and topic were put to a vote by its membership. Votes are in and, by popular demand, Matthew Turland will be presenting on the development of PHP-based web services using the Zend Framework. This presentation will be targetted at developers, but will include background information on the various web service protocols supported in Zend Framework as well as their respective framework components. Blake Deville's presentation on OpenSolaris and Sun xVM VirtualBox raised a lot of interesting inquiries and discussion. Thanks again to UL Computer Science Department for hosting the meeting as well as to special guest Matt Delcambre from Sun Microsystems for fielding questions. - BarCamp Lafayette will be held on 10/4 at the Travis Technology Center. It will include a segment for developers to discuss the technologies and platforms they use and potential impact of the LUSFiber project on their innovations.
- UL Today is looking for people with experience in PHP/MySQL-based open source content management systems to provide volunteer consulting (likely for one evening with a meal provided) on a project to port their web site from an existing solution. Contact Joe Abraham for more information.

Blake Deville will be presenting on the OpenSolaris operating system and its use on the Sun xVM VirtualBox virtualization platform. This presentation will include how to obtain and install OpenSolaris and major differences between it and other operating systems. Those who attended the last meeting can look forward to learning more about individual desktop users' applications for virtualization. Thanks to all who attended the June 2008 meeting of the Acadiana Open Source Group. The presentation given by Bryan Fusilier on virtualization with Xen was very well-received. Thanks to Abacus Data Exchange and the Travis Technology Center for their hospitality in hosting the meeting and providing a tour of their facilities after the presentation. - Congratulations to the Firefox development team for receiving over eight million downloads of Firefox 3 within the first 24 hours of its release. You can continue to spread the word about Firefox via the Spread Firefox campaign web site.

- Frank Ducrest is planning a workshop on the Alice programming language to take place on Saturday July 12 from 10 AM to 12 PM in room 106 of the Advanced Computer Technology and Research building on UL campus. Please contact Frank to sign up.
- A few pontential projects have been suggested for AOS to increase open source awareness, particularly in the educational system, with the help of the Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council. If you think you'd be interested in contributing old computer components, organizing reception of contributions, or instructing teachers and students in the installation and use of OSS, contact Joe Abraham.
- For PHP developers, the annual Zend PHP Conference and Expo is coming up in September. It will take place in the convention center in Santa Clara, CA and its session schedule will include a presentation by one of our members, Matthew Turland.
